Why Canadians consider gynecologic surgery abroad
Procedures such as hysterectomy, fibroid surgery (myomectomy), and endometriosis surgery are performed routinely in Canada; the issue is how long access takes. According to the Fraser Institute's 2025 report, gynaecology has a median wait of 40.6 weeks from family doctor referral to treatment, well above the national median of 28.6 weeks across all specialties. The wait from referral to a first appointment with a gynaecologist is 25.0 weeks, the second longest of any specialty surveyed.

The wait continues at the surgical stage. For procedures completed in 2025, the median wait from the specialist appointment to a hysterectomy was about 16 weeks in Ontario, about 20 weeks in both British Columbia and Alberta, and about 26 weeks in Quebec, with some smaller provinces reporting considerably longer, for example around 52 weeks in New Brunswick. These figures cover only the stage from the specialist appointment to surgery; once the roughly 25 week wait to reach the specialist is added, the total wait is much longer for most patients (Fraser Institute, 2025).

According to the 2026 cancer projection published in CMAJ, uterine cancer is the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Canada, and its incidence continues to rise; for gynecologic cancer we coordinate care through our Oncology page. Treatment at an accredited hospital abroad is one option for earlier care. It applies to planned, elective procedures that can be arranged in advance, not to emergencies.
How gynecologic surgery abroad works for Canadians
Gynecologic surgery abroad for Canadians follows a clear path: you share your medical file and imaging, we match you with an accredited hospital and surgeon, you meet the operating surgeon in a free online consultation, and then we coordinate the hospital, travel, accommodation, and follow-up after you return.
Maple Med Global is a coordination service; the medical care is provided by the accredited hospital and its physicians, who hold clinical responsibility for your treatment.

Treatment abroad is private and paid directly by you. The quote sets out what is and is not included. If you prefer not to pay all at once, instalment financing is available through third-party providers, with payment made to us or the hospital and repaid over time.

Gynecologic procedures we coordinate
The gynecologic procedures we coordinate most often at accredited hospitals are set out below. The specific technique and recovery plan for your case are recommended by the surgeon in a free online consultation before any commitment.

Hysterectomy
Removal of the uterus for conditions such as fibroids, heavy bleeding, adenomyosis, or prolapse. Laparoscopic, robotic, and vaginal approaches vary by case.

Fibroid treatment (myomectomy)
Removal of uterine fibroids while preserving the uterus, an option for patients who wish to keep their uterus.

Endometriosis surgery
Laparoscopic excision of endometriosis that causes pelvic pain and heavy periods.

Prolapse and urogynecology
Vaginal or laparoscopic repair for uterine or vaginal wall prolapse and related urinary symptoms.

Ovarian cyst surgery
Removal of persistent, enlarging, or symptomatic ovarian cysts (cystectomy).

Laparoscopic gynecology
The minimally invasive, small-incision approach used across most of these procedures, with less pain and faster recovery. Robotic-assisted and hysteroscopic options are available depending on the hospital.
In vitro fertilization and fertility care are not covered here; see our Fertility page. For gynecologic cancer, see our Oncology page.
Who is suited to travel for gynecologic surgery
Whether to travel for treatment is a clinical matter for qualified physicians, and we encourage you to discuss any plan with your own physician in Canada. The specialist who would treat you abroad reviews your file to confirm whether your case can be treated at that centre. When you share your records, we relay the specialist's view on whether suitable options exist; some cases are better treated closer to home.
How we choose your hospital and surgical team
We select the hospital on three criteria in every case: the hospital's volume in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, the surgeon's experience with your specific procedure, and an international patient department with English-language support. We share the hospital we recommend, with the surgeon's name and professional background, before any commitment. The international hospitals we work with hold Joint Commission International (JCI), Accreditation Canada, or equivalent accreditation. If you want to compare, you can ask for more than one option.
Where Canadians can have gynecologic surgery abroad
We coordinate gynecologic surgery for Canadian patients at established international centres across the Americas, Europe, and Asia. The right destination depends on both your case and your priorities, such as expertise, language, timing, and travel preference....

Countries
Noted for
The United States offers fellowship-trained minimally invasive gynecologic surgeons and access to top-ranked programs; self-pay cost is high, so it is most suitable for patients with private international health insurance. Mexico offers short flights from Canada and minimal time difference, which can make travel and follow-up easier for benign gynecologic surgery
Europe
Turkiye is a leading international medical travel destination, with robotic-assisted (da Vinci) gynecologic surgery widely available. Spain is noted for specialized deep endometriosis units and advanced minimally invasive gynecologic surgery
Asia
India offers high procedure volume and English-speaking, internationally trained surgeons, with broad availability of laparoscopic and robotic gynecologic surgery. South Korea has academic centres that lead in single-incision, single-port robotic gynecologic surgery (da Vinci SP)
If you have already decided on a destination, we will factor that in. All the countries we work with are listed on our Destinations page.
