Where to Stay

International patients typically stay in central Tel Aviv, close to the main hospitals and within easy reach of Ben Gurion Airport, in walkable districts near the seafront. Israel has a Mediterranean climate, so spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, are the most comfortable times for recovery. Peak summer, July and August, brings heat and humidity that can be harder during recovery, and hotel rates are at their highest in August.

Safety and Travel

The Government of Canada currently advises avoiding all travel to Israel because of the regional security situation. This is a temporary status tied to current events, not a reflection of Israel's medical system, and we will update this page as soon as conditions allow. While this advisory is in effect, we are not coordinating travel to Israel, and obtaining valid travel insurance for a new trip is generally not possible because insurers treat the situation as a known circumstance.

The information on this page describes Israel's established role in care for international patients, for planning purposes. Please review the current advisory before making any decision: Government of Canada travel advisory for Israel

Featured Treatments in Israel

Israel has long been a recognized destination for international patients, with leading Tel Aviv hospitals ranked among the world's best and reported figures of roughly 30,000 medical travelers a year before the pandemic. Its strengths are concentrated in a few areas where the country has genuine, documented depth.

Fertility and IVF

Israel performs the highest number of IVF cycles per capita in the world, a figure confirmed in peer-reviewed research, reflecting decades of clinical volume and expertise. Fertility care is available in Canada, but public funding is limited and varies by province, so many Canadians pay privately at home. For patients weighing private fertility care, Israel combines deep experience with transparent costs.

Orthopedic Surgery

Israeli centers perform high volumes of joint replacement and spinal surgery, with robotic and navigation-assisted techniques at major hospitals. Orthopedic surgery is available in Canada but carries some of the longest public wait times in the country, which is why many patients look abroad for knee and hip procedures.

Oncology

Israel's major hospitals are established cancer referral centers, including for complex care such as bone marrow transplantation, with internationally recognized programs. Cancer care in Canada is one of the faster areas of the public system, so the reason to consider Israel is usually access to a specific technology, a clinical trial, or a second opinion rather than speed.

Cardiac Care

Leading Israeli hospitals run established programs for complex cardiac surgery and catheterization. Urgent cardiac care in Canada is prioritized and seen quickly, so Israel is most relevant for elective cases or a second opinion.

Costs and Canadian Wait Times

The Fraser Institute's 2025 report records a national median wait of 28.6 weeks from referral to treatment, with orthopedic surgery at 48.6 weeks. The price ranges below are indicative and vary widely by hospital and case complexity.

Knee replacement (total)

Canada, public wait: Orthopedic surgery, Fraser Institute 2025 median 48.6 weeks

Hip replacement

Israel: CAD up to 50,000

Canada, public wait: Orthopedic surgery, Fraser Institute 2025 median 48.6 weeks

Heart bypass (CABG)

Israel: CAD around 41,000
